"Will you be ready for the next disaster", was the focus of a public forum hosted by the Carter County Long Term Recovery Committee on October 25th. The public meeting was held at the Olive Hill Senior Citizens Center. Guest speaker for the event was Robin Combs, Assistant Director, Property and Casualty Division of the Kentucky Department of Insurance. Literature dealing with disaster preparedness was distributed to those in attendance. Refreshments were served by Carter County Extension Homemakers.
2010 Flood
A National Emergency Grant was obtained through the Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program and administered through Northeast Community Action in Olive Hill. This grant provided workers in Carter County for creek clean-up and also funded outreach workers to identify and assist clients affected by the May and July 2010 floods
to recover as quickly and totally as possible.
Through this grant 16 people were hired to work cleaning the creek and 5 caseworkers were assigned for community outreach.
Caseworkers contacted over 300 persons either by phone or in person in the flood affected areas of Carter County.
50 cases were opened.
14 cases were given financial assistance from CCLTR funds
2 cases were opened to assist with appeals after FEMA and/or insurance companies denied their claims. These cases were successfully resolved.
50 cases have been successfully completed.
Carter County Long Term Recovery provided financial assistance of $3,987 for materials to flood victims.
FEMA payments of $5,574.65 were given to flood victims on appeals assisted by CCLTR.
Referrals were given to Northeast Weatherization, Grahn School Community Center, and Faith Base Church groups for summer labor.
